Cultural Engagement

While global missions will always be a significant part of the church’s work, the world right around us is also incredibly diverse. This diversity is now a fact of life regardless of where one serves. Both overseas and locally, the reality of diverse communities and cross-cultural dynamics means cultural engagement is now an important aspect of all ministry contexts.

Cultural engagement involves developing an understanding of different cultures, an understanding of cross-cultural dynamics, and the ability to understand one’s own cultural context. This is cultural intelligence or cultural I.Q. The ultimate end of growing in cultural intelligence is the ability to do contextualized ministry in a way that effectively serves those in various cultural settings.

Cultural engagement is an underappreciated aspect of ministry within distinct sub-cultures that are not simply ethno-racial or national in nature. Cultural engagement is an important aspect of serving communities on the margins. Examples of such contexts can include the homeless population in a given area, immigrant communities, and incarcerated populations.

Effective cross-cultural contextualization requires an understanding of the distinction between universal or transcendent ideas versus ideas or practices that are culturally mediated. In a sense, this requires understanding the difference between the “Bread of Life” and the wrapper it comes in.

STRATEGIES

Goal 1:

– I will conduct an updated census of the 77096 zip code area surrounding PCF Church and create an updated demographic breakdown of the community

Goals 2:

Goal 1: 77096 & Houston SW Census Reporter

This is a simpler census report that I generated on Census Reporter. It shows the 77096 and larger Houston SW areas near the church.

Goal 2: CIS Partnership Proposal

This is a document showing partnership options with CIS, one of the groups I proposed we partner with to develop relationships in schools

These two document show the nonprofit offers and registration for a unique church email and cloud-based productivity suite. PCF Church did not have a website or church email, so I began began working to establish a site and launch email campaigns to community members.

Goal 2: Microsoft Email Proposal

Goal 2: The BLESS App Proposal

These are the advertisement and training videos I used to propose the benefit of PCF utilizing the BLESS App to engage individual members in the community.  Some interest was shown in the app, but we never purchased a subscription.

This is an email I sent to PCF's pastor after taking the EFCA course on Church Health and Multiplication. It shows my desire to revitalize the church by engaging the community.

Goal: Church Revitalization Proposal

Reminder: What Happens to the Distant?

This is the EFCA document on church closure that I passed on to the pastor at PCF Church. It is a reminder that a church that is removed from it's community cannot thrive.

Learning Reflection Statement

As I developed and demonstrated Cultural Engagement, I have learned ... [something you learned about yourself, about people, about ministry, and/or about God].

Lifelong Development

As a result of the experiences documented by these artifacts, I will continue to develop in Cultural Engagement by continuing to learn how to build engaging and unifying relationships between the church and her community in ways that propel the gospel forward and keep up the life of the church and the community.
